My Qualifications

I have a B.Ed (Hons) degree and am trained to teach age 7 - 12 year olds. My specialism was Physical Education and my Honours Elective was Outdoor Education. I went to Reading University immediately after my A-levels and entered the teaching profession once qualified in 1992. So many of the skills and experiences I have gained from teaching have transferred to childminding. Because I taught in primary schools, I am experienced in teaching all subjects. I mainly taught Year 6 during my career and the youngest year group I taught was Year 3. I spent a couple of years in a secondary school helping with their transition programme.

I needed to complete another qualification when I decided to leave teaching to become a childminder, because I didn't have Early Years experience. I completed this qualification with PACEY. The qualification is:

L3 CACHE Preparing to Work in Home-based Childcare

It gave me a chance to understand the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) which is the statutory document all Early Years providers must follow. It also helped me to write my own policies and understand how to set up and run a successful business.

I have full and updated Paediatric First Aid training. This is renewed every three years.

Other courses that I have taken since becoming a childminder include:

I am a Hygge Accredited Setting. Hygge (pronounced Hue-gah) is a term which more or less translates as 'the Danish approach to living well that focuses on being in the moment and embracing the feelings of warmth, simplicity and togetherness.'

During this study, I've reflected on my own practice and made changes. It's very much an ethos that focuses on own well-being, being in the moment and appreciating what you have and what is around you. My setting has evolved since I started childminding and I barely have any plastic toys. I favour natural and authentic resources which the children can use creatively.
